In fact, hot glue is as permanent as epoxy glue and is suitable in applications where epoxy is not. The gun uses a continuously operating heating element to melt the plastic glue, which the user pushes through the gun with a mechanical firing mechanism on the gun or with direct finger pressure. The molecular weight distribution and the degree of crystallinity influence the breadth of the melting temperature range. When cooled to a temperature below its melting point, the hot melt glue results in a strong bond that ensures its durability.

To achieve the properties of semicrystalline polymers, amorphous polymers would require too high molecular weights and therefore an unreasonably high melt viscosity; the use of amorphous polymers in hot melt adhesives is normally only as modifiers. Some of the disadvantages involve thermal loading of the substrate, which limits use to substrates not sensitive to higher temperatures, and loss of bond strength at higher temperatures, until complete melting of the adhesive. In addition to hot melt bars, HMA can be supplied in other formats, such as granular or power hot melt blocks for bulk melt processors. The composition is normally formulated to have a glass transition temperature (onset of brittleness) below the lowest service temperature and also a suitably high melting temperature.

If the hot glue moves a lot or needs to stay flexible, then you should use latex-based paint or the paint will peel off. For use in industrial processes, the adhesive is supplied in larger sticks and glue guns with higher melt speeds. The melt viscosity and crystallization rate (and the corresponding open time) can be adapted for the application.
